| In 1876, John Oman
moved his family from Scotland to Nashville, Tennessee and
started a business concentrating on cut stone and masonry work
until 1881. In 1881, the company was awarded its first bridge
contract for the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railroad. That bridge was the beginning of Oman Construction Company, which grew with the country, building bridges, embankments, tunnels and railroad facilities. In 1908, when the horseless carriage went into production, Oman Construction Company added heavy/highway construction to its expanding capabilities. In the early 1940's, Oman Construction Company installed telephone lines along the Alaska-Canadian (Alcan) Highway. This important overland military supply route, a 1,522-mile roadway through the wilderness, connected Dawson Creek, British Columbia, with Fairbanks, Alaska. In 1954, Oman began its first foreign project in Portugal's Azores Islands for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The company returned to Azores in the 1960's and again in 1985 and 1986, for the U.S. Navy Facilities Engineering Command, rebuilding the outdated installations. In the 1970's, Oman Construction Company was back in Alaska helping build the Trans Alaska Pipeline. In 1992 Oman Systems, Inc. (OSI) was incorporated by two Oman Construction Company principals who developed an estimating program called ProEstimate. With years of experience in estimating and building heavy/highway projects, they started marketing the program at a local level.
